Overview

Chronic Pancreatitis It is a pathological disorder resulting from permanent damage to the pancreas as a result of inflammation, and it is common among middle-aged males between 30 and 40. [1]

Pancreatitis is considered chronic when episodes of acute inflammation occur repeatedly, or when the inflammation lasts months or years. [1]

Causes of chronic pancreatitis

Chronic inflammation of the pancreas is mainly associatedwith excessive alcohol consumption, which is responsible for approximately 70% of cases of chronic pancreatitis. [1]

Other causes of chronic pancreatitis include: [1] [2] [3]

  • Autoimmune diseases, which occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the pancreas.
  • Pancreatic duct obstruction due to gallstones or pancreatic stones .
  • Cystic fibrosis, a hereditary disease that causes thick mucus to accumulate in the lungs and digestive system, is the most common cause of chronic pancreatitis in children.
  • Inherited genetic mutations that affect pancreatic functions.
  • Hypercalcemia, which is a high level of calcium in the blood and often occurs as a result of hyperactivity of the parathyroid glands.
  • Hyperlipidemia, which is high levels of triglycerides in the blood.
  • Use of some medications, such as azathioprine, sulphonamides, and some diuretics.
